It's easy to get discouraged when thinking about how far we still have to go in the world of science and medicine. But hearing these truly incredible stories will give you some inspiration and hope for the future.
In 1848, a steel rod flew through the skull of Phineas Gage when he was working on a railroad. The doctors were able to move the rod...and he survived.
He is pictured holding the rod above.
Buffalo Bill Kevin Everett suffered an incredibly tragic spinal injury on the field in 2007. To the disbelief of many, he was able to work after that.
D'Zhana Simmons, a 14-year-old with a complicated heart complication, received a heart transplant that failed. She was able to survive for 118 days with NO heart, only artificial blood bumps. She received a successful transplant later.
Katrina Burgess, who is now a working model, was in a car crash in 2007. Her body had to be put together with 11 different pins, and she survived.
This woman was in an accident where her skull became separated from her spine. Because the spinal cord remained in pretty good shape, though, she was able to survive with quick work from the doctors.
Alciedes Moreno fell from 47-stories when he was washing windows one day. He survived, and is now healthy as a horse.
For perspective, keep this in mind: half of the people who fall from just FOUR stories do not survive.
