9 Little-Known Women That Played A Big Role In Bringing Down The Nazis In WWII

The heroes of history don't all have Y chromosomes. These female spies were integral in the defeat of the Nazis in World War II.

1. Odette Hallowes

Odette only became enrolled as part of the Special Operations Executive by accident, but she would spend the rest of her life doing that work. She worked under Peter Churchill until she was hanged in a Concentration Camp. 

2. Virginia Hall

Virginia was just an all-around badass. She was an ambulance driver who began working as a spy for the allies. She was the brains behind many raids against the Nazis. Eventually she trained resistance groups as well. 

3. Cecile Pearl Witherington

Witherington's storied career as a spy and fighter is nothing short of amazing. She was a messenger at first, but took the reins when those above her got killed and ended up leading troops herself. A thousand German soldiers were killed while she was the leader, and 18,000 surrendered.  

4. Krystyna Skarbek

Krystyna put in a stunning 13 years as a skilled spy in various capacities before she was tortured and killed. 

5. Diana Rowden

She became a useful part of the Special Operations Executive when she worked to deliver messages to agents. She had a background in journalism and worked as a journalist before joining the executive. The Peugeot factory was actually planned by Rowden. She was eventually betrayed and killed.  

6. Andree Borrel

Andree worked in Portugal as well as France as part of the Special Operations Executive. She was at the head of a major attack against the Nazis. She was tortured and cremated alive at a concentration camp when her identity was discovered. 

7. Vera Leigh

Before being killed in a concentration camp, she was a vital part of the Special Operations Executive as well as a resistance network. 

8. Violette Reine

This woman was the queen of sabotage. She worked for the Special Operations Executive and would get involved in bombing missions against the British and sabotage them. She was captured in 1945 and executed at Saarbrucken.

9. Nancy Wake

Nancy was another former journalist-turned-spy who actually was known for her prowess at killing people with her bare hands.
