Can You Imagine Being the Kid Who Wrecked This 1.5 Million Dollar Piece of Art?

by N/A, 8 years ago | 2 min read

Recently, at Museum in Taipei, during a tour for “The Face of Leonardo, Images of a Genius” exhibit, a 12-year-old boy tripped and punched a hole through a 17th century painting valued at $1.5 million dollars.

Suffice it to say, it was easily the worst day of his life.

"Oh God...oh no...oh no no no no no no."
While it is reparable, the integrity of the painting will never be the same.

“Once these works are damaged, they are permanently damaged,” says the exhibition’s Facebook page.

After all, it is a 400-plus-year-old painting and the boys palm went straight through it.

“The boy’s hand made contact with the artwork and left a hole the size of a fist.”

Suffice it to say, the exhibitionists have their work cut out for them.

“The painting’s bottom right is damaged.”

But when they do begin fixing the painting, their goal will be to fix the canvas' structure, not the paint itself.

“When we start working on the painting’s restoration, the priority is to strengthen its structure...”

To do so would be a travesty to the artist and simply isn't an option.

“Not retouching the paint on the damaged area.”

In the end, exhibit representatives were commendably gracious towards the boy.

“This is just a simple accident, please don’t blame a 12 year-old child.”

Fortunately for all involved - especially, the boy - insurance will cover the restoration costs, which are being done in Taiwan before the painting is sent back to Italy.

Either way, that poor kid is probably never going to hear the end of this from his friends.
