A Forest For A Campus — How This Vietnamese University Is Bringing Nature Into Its School

This university's sustainability initiative is unlike anything you've seen before.
This is FPT University, a private technology school in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
The campus stretches across 14 square miles and is about to undergo some major changes.Â
Vo Trong Nghia Architects is working with the university to create a much more green and environmentally friendly space.
The architecture firm is working to fill multi-level spaces with trees and plants.Â
The addition of trees and plants to the buildings will help to insulate classrooms, aid storm water runoff, and offset the urban heat island effect which is a common occurrence in cities that are crowded with buildings.
Officials estimate that nearly half of the green spaces in Ho Chi Minh City have disappeared in the last ten years.Â
Vietnam has a history of frequent blackouts, so designers are hoping that the greenery will require that the campus is less dependent on air conditioners.
