Where do I reserve my tickets?
Theatre kids and musical fans everywhere, I’ve got some news that’ll blow that acrylic-blend scarf right off your neck!
A live adaption of Baz Luhrmann’s deliciously over-the-top film, “Moulin Rouge!,” is happening. If you love Belle Époque Paris, tasteless yet intricate costumes and sexualized dance numbers, you’re in for a real treat!
Global Creatures is developing the production, with John Logan of “Skyfall” and “Gladiator” writing the script. Alex Timbers, who helmed “Peter and the Starcatcher” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” is slated to direct. Global Creatures is familiar with Luhrmann’s style, as they’ve previously taken his film “Strictly Ballroom” from screen to stage.
Set in Paris, “Moulin Rouge!” is the story of a “penniless writer” who falls hard for Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge—a cabaret house. Satine is a highly sought-after dancer, actress and courtesan.
The film was released by Twentieth Century Fox in 2001, complete with Christina Aguilera singing,“Gitchi gitchi ya ya da da” on the soundtrack. It was nominated for eight Oscars, winning two, at the 74th Academy Awards. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor played the star-crossed lovers who serenaded one another with love ballads such as “Come What May” and “Elephant Love Medley.”
The opening venue and debut date is yet to be disclosed, but the show is currently in development.
Did we mention the music?
And the dancing?
The spectacular costumes?
The dreamlike setting?
Or the doomed love story?
The wait is more than we can bear!
