Throw pillows easily give a room a cozy feel during cold months, or an energetic burst when the weather gets warm. But choosing the perfect combination can be stressful. Before you get overwhelmed, use this simple formula as a starting point.

Here are a few more tips to consider when styling your sofa:

  1. When mixing patterns, try to select options from at least two different “types” for variety. Some pattern types include: floral or natural, geometric, striped and abstract.
  2. An odd number of pillows is more visually appealing than an even number. You can duplicate any category from the mix & match formula — or leave one out to reach an odd number.
  3. When arranging pillows, place the larger ones closest to the edges of the couch or bed, and layer smaller ones across the middle.
